In July 1941, Ruth Dickson arrived in the Sayward Valley as a new bride with her husband George, a logger. They lived in this remote logging district until 1950, raising three children.
These two books, Pebbles in the Stream and River Rocks chronicle those long-ago days from Ruth Dickson’s perspective. It was a life of challenges, joys, and tears – but one that is now all but forgotten. Told in the first person, this remarkable story carries the reader back to a time few of us can imagine.
“It’s so long ago, now, that those years feel like a once-upon-a-time story,” Ruth remarked.
This autobiography is told with a clarity that belies the intervening years because Ruth kept an informal “diary” - notes hand-written on small pieces of paper tucked into her sewing basket . These scraps have been the inspiration for many stories over the years.
Combined with Ruth’s poetry and personal photographs, this is a tale that comes alive – of a time that is no more, but which shaped Vancouver Island’s history, as well as that of Ruth and her family.

Ruth Dickson turned 91 in 2010 and lives in Comox, British Columbia. She is an accomplished artist as well as a prolific writer – one, she says, with many more stories to tell. This is her second published book. The Lighthouse Kids, a novel based on her family history, was published in 2008.
