Hints for Market Shoppers
* For best selection, shop early. Growers often bring just a few pounds of some items, and naturally the choice produce goes first.
* Take time to chat with farmers. Building relationships is part of the fun of shopping at farmers' markets. You will become a wiser shopper, probably improve your cooking skills, and make a new friend.
* Take your children with you. Too many kids have no idea where food comes from and how it looks in its unprocessed state.
* Try not to over-buy. One of the main reasons to shop at a farmers' market is to get fresh food and cook it while it is still fresh
* Take your own bags or shopping baskets. Our new Comox Valley Farmers' Market bags are available from most vendors.
* Buy something you haven't tried before. A farmers' market is a great place to get educated about food. Never cooked bison or fresh tuna? Our farmers and fishers can advise you how to select and prepare it.
* Plan to go straight home after your shopping expedition, on a hot day, so you don't leave your purchases in a sweltering car.
